Pakistan is a developing
nation very much in need of well prepared
mathematicians for its universities,
colleges and schools. During the past
7 years, the Abdus Salam School of
Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS) with
the help of Pakistani mathematical
community has made very concrete efforts
to meet this need. As a result of
some of these efforts, the ASSMS has
been successful in creating a Ph.D
program that enrolled 139 full time
Ph.D students, 47 have already completed
their Ph.D degree. Several other universities
in Pakistan also have Ph.D programs
in mathematics, although of smaller
size.
The 5th World Conference on 21st
Century Mathematics 2011 is being
organized to:
-
Provide an
opportunity to young mathematics
scholars to interact with well
known mathematicians from abroad.
Such an interaction will broaden
their research horizon and will
introduce them to new problems
that they can work on.
-
Provide a
platform to the mathematicians
from all over the world to exchange
ideas about mathematics education
and research. Such an interaction
can lead to fruitful long term
collaborations which will be beneficial
for the development of mathematics
in Pakistan and neighboring nations
in the region.
This conference is
being held under the auspices of the
European Mathematical Society (EMS),
International Mathematical Union (IMU),
The Abdus Salam International Centre
for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), National
Center for Mathematics (NCM)and Higher
Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.
About 400 participants including 45-50
foreign speakers are expected to attend
the conference.
