M.Phil/Ph. D Program
 
Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), Lahore offers a full time M.Phil/Ph.D program in Mathematical Sciences keeping outstanding international standards. The School has distinguished foreign faculty who are known world-wide for their professional excellence.

Applications for admission to the M.Phil/Ph.D program are invited from the individuals having a strong aptitude for research. The applicants must have one of the following degrees.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematical Science or equivalents OR
  • 4 years B.Sc with major in Mathematics
Following students are also eligible to apply:
  • Students waiting for the results of their final exam
  • Students in the final semester of their M.Sc or 4 years B.Sc program

Admission criteria would be based upon past academic performance, admission test and interview conducted by the School. The School will require exclusive time commitment from its research students.Financial assistance will be provided to the students subject to the availability of funds from the Government.

Student Selection for Program
 
A first screening is carried out through a written test, which generally takes place in April or early May. The written test date is advertised in the major newspapers of Pakistan as well as on several websites such as the website of Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, a website which is most frequently visited by the young science graduates in Pakistan. The admission process and dates are also advertised on the website of the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS) itself. Students qualifying the written test are interviewed by an international board of examiners. On the basis of these interviews, a selection is made for admission into the M.Phil/Ph.D program. Students are also required to achieve a certain level of performance in the international subject GRE.
 
Programme Breakup
 
  • Prior to the start of coursework all students are required to take NTS test with a minimum score of 50 points.
  • Each student must complete a course work of 30 credits with a minimum score of 70%.
  • After successfully completing the 30 credits course work, students must take subject GRE international test. In the same time students must take additional course work of M.Phil/Ph.D level with minimum 18 credits followed by a comprehensive Examination.
  • M.Phil/Ph. D dissertation must be evaluated by at least two experts from academically advanced countries.
  • Acceptance / publication of at least one research paper in an ISI journal is essential before the submission of M.Phil/Ph.D thesis.
 
Thesis and its Evaluation
 
  • Thesis is a compulsory requirement for the award of M.Phil/Ph. D degree.
  • Thesis can be submitted within three years of admission to the programme. Permission of the supervisor(s) for submission of the thesis is must.
  • The thesis must make distinct contribution to discipline and should provide an evidence of original research.
  • During the period of research, the supervisor has to give candidate’s performance report to the Director General after every 6 months.
  • An extension in the submission time of the thesis may be granted by the Director General on the recommendation of the supervisor up to a maximum duration of two more years.
  • The candidate has to submit six copies of the typed thesis in hard form.
  • The thesis shall be examined by 2 referees appointed by the Director General ASSMS from a panel of 4 referees suggested by the supervisor(s) both of them belonging to reputed foreign universities, besides his supervisor(s).
  • The reports of the referees shall be scrutinized by the Academic Committee of the ASSMS. If the reports declare the thesis to be satisfactory and recommend for the award of M.Phil/Ph.D degree, the Director General, ASSMS shall appoint a Board of Examiners for the viva-voce Examination of the candidate to defend his/her thesis.
  • The board for the viva-voce examination shall comprise of the Director General, one Internal examiner, one External examiner and the supervisor(s) of the candidate.
  • On the satisfactory performance of the candidate in the viva-voce examination the Board of Examiners shall recommend to the Academic Committee of ASSMS for the award of the degree to the candidate.
  • The accepted thesis, its formulation/ invention of commercial interest shall become the property of the ASSMS, GC University Lahore.
